Arbitration in anchor discrimination case

August 4, 2009 by Veronica Villafañe

A federal judge has ruled that an age and sex discrimination suit brought on by 3 senior female anchors at KMBC-9 is subject to binding arbitration.

Maria Antonia, who filed the suit last year, had anchored at the Kansas City station for 25 years and was considered the city’s most recognizable Hispanic journalist. She claims she was demoted and replaced by a younger female. The other 2 women in the suit – Kelly Eckerman and Peggy Brei make the same arguments.

The Kansas City Star reports the judge’s decision is a setback for the women, who had hoped to have their day in court. The ruling revolves around the women’s personal services contract and collective bargaining agreements.
