East Valley Tribune gets buyer

There’s a breath of hope for the East Valley Tribune. An unidentified buyer has emerged. Publisher Julie Moreno told the Tribune that parent company Freedom Communications received a letter of intent to purchase the Pulitzer-prize winning newspaper.

Freedom, currently in Chapter 11, will try to get the bankruptcy judge to approve the offer so they can complete the sale by the end of the year. According to Moreno, a “substantial” number of employees will stay on, and the paper and the Web site will continue operating.

The Arizona paper in Mesa had announced at the beginning of this month it would be shutting down both its print and Web publications.
