McClatchy reports profits

McClatchy ends 2009 on a positive note. It earned a profit of $25.8 million in the 4th quarter. A year ago it posted a $27 million loss during the same period. The company also announced yesterday it plans to delay the deadline to repay debt.

CEO Gary Pruitt said McClatchy’s online audience continues to grow, as well as digital advertising revenues, with an increase of almost 15% in Q4 compared to 2008. In yesterday’s media conference call, he mentioned that 44% of ad revenues were coming in through digital channels.

On another note, there’s talk McClatchy will slowly start exploring pay walls for online access to their publications.
