400 job losses in local TV news in 2009

According to the RTDNA/Hofstra University Annual Survey, 400 people in local TV news lost their jobs in 2009. That’s actually good compared to 2008, when 1200 people lost jobs in TV news. Despite the job losses, the amount of news on the average station rose to a record high of 5 hours per weekday.

But it looks like there’s a little more optimism for 2010. Over 60% of news directors surveyed said they don’t expect any layoffs this year.
