Hulu moving towards paid content model

Since Hulu launched 2 years ago, the website has provided free access to a substantial online video library. But watching TV shows for free on their site may soon be coming to an end.

Sources have told Reuters that Hulu, which is owned by News Corp, NBCU and Walt Disney, is developing a subscription service to be rolled out on multiple devices in the next couple of months. Apparently, Hulu will continue to offer new episodes of TV shows for free, but would charge viewers a monthly fee to watch older episodes and other content.

Industry analysts are keeping a close watch. If Hulu’s attempt at a paid model succeeds with consumers, other content providers could be following their lead.

By the way, Hulu made $100 million in advertising revenue in 2009.
