NAHJ convention begins in Denver

I’m in Denver, at the 28th annual NAHJ convention, which officially begins today. As of this morning, there were 700 registered attendees. That’s slightly less than last year, when it was held in Puerto Rico. Executive director Iván Román says the organization was hoping for 1,000 registrants. The final numbers should get higher by the end of the convention, as more people are expected to register on site.

Once again this year, multimedia training takes center stage. Additionally, this year NAHJ is offering entrepreneurship training.

“We’re focusing on training and giving people what they need,” Ivan tells me. “We’re pushing the philosophy of getting journalists to understand that they can work on their own. We’re teaching journalists how to get money to start a business, how to run it, how to be an entrepreneur.”

22 people are participating today in an entrepreneur bootcamp. UNITY is also doing an entrepreneur bootcamp at NAHJ, NABJ, AAJA and NAJA.
