Telemundo staffers to get L.A. May Day settlements

Telemundo network reporter Carlos Bottifoll, cameraman Fernando Mejía, producer Elisa Rojas and security guard Raad Elias are expected to get $50,ooo each, as is KTLA-5 reporter Ted García as part of L.A.’s settlements stemming from the 2007 “May Day Melee.”

The AP reports the L.A. City Council today will approve $500,000 in settlements to members of the media injured by LAPD during the incident 3 years ago, with a KCAL/KCBS cameraman getting $250,000.

Three years ago, L.A. police shot rubber bullets, tear gas and used batons on a crowd of marching protesters, in an effort to disperse the mass of people after an immigration rally. Several media crews caught the chaos on camera.

KTTV-11 reporter Christina González, her camerawoman Patti Ballaz, KPCC reporter Patricia Nazario and KTLA cameraman Thomas Mecozzi also sued the city, but according to NBC, are not included in the proposed settlement.

Last year, the L.A. City Council paid $13 million to settle lawsuits filed by people injured during the demonstration.
