Layoffs, furloughs at Miami Herald

The Miami Herald today announced it will be slashing 49 staff positions throughout all divisions and levels of the company. The cuts will be achieved by involuntary layoffs, some buyouts and the elimination of open positions. A furlough during the fourth quarter will be instituted for additional cost reductions.

In the Miami Herald newsroom, 7 full-time and 2 part-time positions will be eliminated. El Nuevo Herald newsroom will lose 4 full-time and 2 part-time jobs.

The paper’s publisher, David Landsberg and executive editor Anders Gyllenhaal, outlined the grim news to staff in 2 memos sent out this morning.
