Cristina says she didn’t want to leave

Uh-oh! Cristina speaks out on the cancellation of her show and makes some strong statements against the network where she was seen for more than 20 years.

Univision pulled the plug on her show, against her wishes, not letting her “retire with respect,” Cristina Saralegui told the Miami Herald during an interview yesterday. “It was so very unexpected the way it was handled; it was so nasty.”

In the interview, she says canceling “El Show de Cristina” had to do “with creative control of the show,” which has been produced by her media company and own studios since 2001. That’s the year her show went from a daily to a weekly, and back then, there was also some behind-the-scenes squabbling that hinted at canceling the show.

Cristina also said she thinks Univision’s decision had to do with her age. She’s 62. “They want to change the image of the network and get rid of older people and put young people there,” she told the Herald.

When Univision announced the end of “Cristina,” they said she wouldn’t be leaving the network entirely – she would continue to host specials. Will they allow her to do so now that she spoke out against the network? And with her comments about her age, ousting the old and bringing in the young, is she positioning herself for an age discrimination lawsuit?

Her last show, which has already been taped, airs November 1st.
