Nielsen pulls plug on radio ratings/press access

“The Nielsen Company has decided to end its measurement of radio in the United States, as of the Fall 2010 period,” the company announced in a statement today.

The company says the decision won’t impact Nielsen’s international radio measurement and that they’ll continue their radio measurement operations in the 11 countries they currently serve.

Nielsen entered the radio ratings business in 2008.

According to Media Life, the Nielsen service measured listenership in 51 mid-sized markets via a paper diary system. The first batch of data was released in the summer of 2009.

Nielsen this morning also announced that it will no longer give out local market radio or television data to the press.
