OWN gets off to a great start

The highly anticipated premiere of the Oprah Winfrey Network was Saturday, Jan. 1. With a slate full of inspirational programming, Oprah hopes to win viewers over and attract them to her ambitious venture.

A number of critics gave the thumbs up to the debut, so did her fans. The Washington Post reports OWN averaged about 1.2 million viewers during primetime from 8 to 10 p.m. EST on Saturday, based on preliminary Nielsen numbers released by the network. Those numbers had OWN ranking third among all ad-supported cable networks in the 25-to-54-year-old audience demo – behind ESPN and USA Network. That’s when the network aired episodes of its reality series, “Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes.”

We’ll have to see what additional programming Oprah whips up in the coming months. The only Latino name in the on-air line-up so far is Elizabeth Espinosa – an L.A. TV reporter who was selected to be one of 10 contestants in the reality series “Your Own Show.” That show debuts this Friday, Jan. 7 at 9 pm.
