Telemundo launches Emmy campaign for "Reina" and Kate

The unprecedented success of Telemundo’s “La Reina del Sur” is prompting the network to launch an aggressive campaign to have the show and its star considered for Emmy nominations in the outstanding drama and leading actress categories.

As part of its first-ever primetime Emmy campaign, Telemundo will upload episodes of the series to the password-protected website of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, mail “For Your Consideration” episodes to Academy members and advertise in Hollywood trades.

It’s not often that Spanish-language entries are submitted for the primetime Emmys. Since there are no categories for Spanish-language programs, “Reina” would be competing with shows from all the big U.S. networks.

Based on Arturo Pérez Reverte’s best-selling novel, “Reina” has broken records for Telemundo. It’s grand finale is Monday, May 30.

Telemundo scored big when it signed popular Kate del Castillo to the lead role. Kate has a huge following due to her roles in Televisa-produced novelas that have aired on Univision. She also had several cross-over film and TV roles, including the bittersweet movie “Under the Same Moon,” and a recurring role on Showtime’s “Weeds.” She recently had a role in the Moctesuma Esparza comedy “Without Men,” with Eva Longoria, scheduled to open this summer.

Nominations for this year’s Emmys will be announced on July 14. The awards telecast is set for September 18.
