Telemundo to host Republican presidential debate

Telemundo announced today that it will produce and broadcast its first ever Republican presidential debate in early December, to take place in Las Vegas.  The debate, produced in partnership with NBC News, will be hosted by news anchor José Díaz-Balart and broadcast on Telemundo.

The debate is part of “Decisión 2012,” a Telemundo News initiative housing political coverage related to the 2012 elections.

News of this debate comes after the Univision fallout over allegations that network executives tried pressuring Senator Marco Rubio to be interviewed by Jorge Ramos on “Al Punto,” in exchange for softening a story about his brother-in-law’s ties to drug trafficking two decades ago.  Univision vehemently denies the claims.

Shortly after news of alleged impropriety by Univision, several Republican presidential candidates announced they would boycott the Univision debate, scheduled for January of 2012.
