Gawker buys Guanabee

Latino pop culture and gossip website Guanabee has been bought by Gawker Media, online publisher of the Gawker, Jezebel and Gizmodo websites. Apparently, Gawker founder and CEO Nick Denton seeks to expand Gawker’s international influence, particularly in Latin America.

As part of the deal, Guanabee founder Daniel Mauser has been hired as Head of International Business, Latin America for Gawker.  He will also help launch and run Gizmodo en Español, “LA GUIA DE GADGETS,” set to debut in January of 2013, according to the announcement on Guanabee.

Folio Magazine interviewed Mauser about the acquisition.  In the interview, Mauser says Guanabee, founded in 2006, was inspired by Gawker and that he had been talking Denton, whom he has known for years, about the evolution of his company.

According to Mauser, Guanabee currently has over 400,000 monthly unique visitors, of which 85 % are Hispanics within the U.S.

About his new role, Mauser says he is charged with expanding Gawker’s properties into Spanish. Gizmodo en Español is just the start.
