Cruz returns to San Diego

March 5, 2013 by Veronica Villafañe

Luis Cruz has left his news director job at KYMA-TV in Yuma to take on a new position as executive producer of afternoon news and programming at U-T TV. That’s U-T San Diego’s new TV station, which streams online and on cable.

The San Diego paper invested $3 million to launch the channel last year.

Luis was News Director at KYMA-TV three times in the past 9 years – from 2004 to 2006, 2008 to 2011 and 2012 to 2013.  In between his news director gigs, Luis held on-air positions.

From 2011 to 2012, he was a reporter and fill in anchor at KGTV-10 in San Diego and was an anchor/reporter at the NBC station in Las Vegas from 2006-2008.

“J.R. Mahon, U-T TV’s Director of News and Programming was an Executive Producer at KGTV in San Diego when I worked there briefly as a reporter and fill-in anchor in between the second and third time I was News Director at KYMA,” Luis tells me about how he landed the new job.  “Bless his heart for giving me the opportunity to come back to San Diego!”
