Cuevas switches from news to sports at Telemundo

Telemundo correspondent Francisco Cuevas is leaving the network news team to join “Deportes Telemundo.” His first appearance as a sports reporter is this Sunday, March 17 on “Titulares Telemundo” at 11 pm ET.

Francisco has been a Telemundo news correspondent for over 20 years, contributing to shows such as “Ocurrió Así,” “Al Rojo Vivo” and “Noticiero Telemundo.”

“The reason why I decided to make the change from news to sports was based on my two recent Olympic coverages, Beijing 2008 and London 2012,” Francisco tells me.  “I got a taste of a different world.  I saw the struggles the athletes and their families make  to represent their countries… I saw the opportunity to tell inspiring  stories about what motivated them to sacrifice their childhoods, their family time and some times other career  opportunities.”

In his new role at the network, Francisco will focus on covering human interest stories about athletes.

“I always loved sports.  I practice and coach basketball in my kids league and I am happy for this new opportunity to explore a different world. I am changing departments but not leaving Telemundo, which has been my home for 20 years.  I will definitely miss my friends in the news department and the adrenaline of rushing to a breaking news assignment. I will miss covering the big news events, but now my focus will be sports…which my kids think is very cool.”
