Telemundo hopes to make a big splash with its newest production.  The network certainly did just that at a press launch event on Monday afternoon in Los Angeles, where it even wheeled in a plane as prop for the presentation.

“El Señor de los Cielos,” a Telemundo Studios and Caracol TV co-production shot on location in Mexico,  stars Rafael Amaya as Aurelio Casillas, a Mexican drug kingpin who sets out to become the richest and most powerful man in the world after Pablo Escobar.

Based on real events, the novela features a cast of more than 275 actors and 3000 extras.  Executives wouldn’t reveal the novela’s budget, but say it’s comparable to that of their hit “La Reina del Sur,” estimated at about 3 million for slightly more than 60 episodes.

Other lead members of the cast are Gabriel Porras, Ximena Herrera and Fernanda Castillo, who were on hand for the L.A press event, led by Joshua Mintz, Executive VP of Telemundo Studios

“El Señor de los Cielos” premieres Monday, April 15 at 10 pm on Telemundo.
