KQED’s Ramírez dies after brief battle with cancer

Raúl Ramírez, Executive Director of News and Public Affairs for San Francisco’s KQED Public Radio has died. He was 67.

Raúl was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in late July.  He passed away this past Friday morning at his home in Berkeley.

Raúl spent 22 years at KQED. He joined the station in 1991. He previously worked as reporter and editor for the San Francisco Examiner, a reporter and assistant city editor for the Oakland Tribune and a metro desk reporter for The Washington Post.  He started his journalism career as a staff writer for The Miami Herald in 1970.

For over 20 years, Raúl was a lecturer for UC Berkeley’s graduate school of journalism and for more than 31 years for San Francisco State University.  He won numerous awards for local, national and international reporting.

Raúl was born in Havana in 1946. His parents sent him to live with relatives in in South Florida in April of 1962, three years after the Cuban revolution.
