Universities and media orgs team up for Hispanic journalists survey

California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), Florida International University, Hispanicize Wire and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) are teaming up to launch a  survey geared at uncovering Hispanic journalists’ beliefs about their careers and their use of social media and technology.

“Hispanic journalists – like many other journalists – are in a period of a lot change, layoffs, furloughs and buyouts,” says Manny Ruiz, a former journalist and founder of Hispanicize.  “This survey will help us understand what journalists are thinking and how they feel about a broad range of topics like their career, social media and technology.  The results of the survey will show the industry what it may need to do to evolve and adjust to these trying times.”

The 5-minute national survey will target U.S. Latino and Puerto Rico-based journalists who produce content for Hispanic and non-Hispanic media outlets.  The survey will be distributed to journalists through Hispanicize Wire as well as thru the NAHJ starting in February 4.

“I expect (from my work with NAHJ) that journalists will share their concerns about fairness in the workplace (voice, advancement, representation and compensation),” says NAHJ president Hugo Balta. “NAHJ will use the information in discussing ways to better serve our members and engage in conversations with media companies.”

The results of the survey will be jointly unveiled as part of the Hispanic Journalist Showcase of the 5th Annual Hispanicize 2014 event that will be held April 1-4 in Miami.
