Telemundo network picked up an Emmy for its coverage of the election of Pope Francis at the 35th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards during a gala ceremony tonight in New York.

This year marks the first time specific categories for Spanish-language television were included.

Telemundo News started its coverage of the event on March 13, 2013 from the moment the white smoke emanated from the Vatican, signaling the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis— the church’s first Latin American Pope.

The network provided continuous updates and analysis on “Un Nuevo Día,” “Al Rojo Vivo con María Celeste” and “Noticiero Telemundo” as well as a live, one-hour special news program.

José Díaz-Balart headed the coverage direct from the Vatican along with reporters Rogelio Mora-Tagle and Vanessa Hauc, with María Celeste Arrarás at the network studios.
