New TV station to launch in Puerto Rico

It has been a busy week in Puerto Rico media news. Exactly one week ago, Univision shut down its news and production operations, laying off about 100 people.

Days later, WAPA announced that starting Monday, October 25, it would produce a new Spanish-language primetime newscast for the U.S. market.

Víctor Montilla, VP and GM of Telecino, Inc. in the new station.

And now, Telecinco Inc., says it’s launching a new television station.

ABC5 Puerto Rico will be affiliated to ABC. The new broadcast channel will debut on November 1, 2014.

Telecinco will be producing two local shows, with Puerto Rican talent, to be announced in the coming weeks.

It will also launch a local English-language newscast in early 2015, in addition to airing ABC programming, including series like “How to get Away with Murder,” ”Modern Family,” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” and special events such as NBA games and the Oscars.

“Our objective is to launch ABC5 as a leader in this market,” says Víctor Montilla, the station’s VP and General Manager. “ABC network has a loyal audience in Puerto Rico, which will grow with total distribution in the market, with high quality content and an active presence in the community.”
