NAHJ and Hispanicize team up for conference; journalist survey

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is continuing to strengthen its relationship with the annual Hispanicize conference, which will be held in Miami from March 16-20.

This year, the NAHJ Miami chapter is helping produce some of the sessions for the Hispanic Journalists Showcase, which will tackle social media and entrepreneurship.

Hugo Balta, NAHJ’s immediate past president and current president Mekahlo Medina helped shape the journalism track for the event.

“This is a partnership that is rooted in empowering more Latinos to set our their own destiny in the media landscape. Our mission is to increase the number of Latinos in newsrooms and partnering with Hispancize allows us to provide another opportunity to offer training and developments for our members,” says Mekahlo. “It also gives non-members a taste of the great training and development we provide in our national conference later in the year. Additionally, it’s important that Hispanic organizations work together to accomplish similar goals. Juntos somos más fuertes.”

As part of the partnership, Hispanicize 2015 will also give 400 free, full access passes for working journalists to attend the event.

“If this bold program is a success this year we will sustain it next year,” says Hispanicize founder and Creative Director Manny Ruiz. “In addition to our collaboration on Hispanicize 2015 we’re having other discussions about how we can use all our social media and event platforms to support the NAHJ and it’s mission on a year round basis.”

One of those collaborations is 2nd Annual State of Hispanic Journalists Survey, conducted for a second year jn a row by NAHJ, in partnership with California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), Hispanicize Wire, and Florida International University (FIU).

The 5-minute national online survey, available in English and Spanish, targets U.S. Latino and Puerto Rico-based journalists and aims to get feedback about their careers and their use of social media and technology.

NAHJ president Mekahlo Medina will present the results at the conference.

The full updated day-by-day schedule of the Hispanic Journalist Showcase is available on the Hispanicize 2015 site and on the event app on iTunes, Android, BlackBerry.
