Stations team up to launch local news app

Five broadcast television station groups have banded together to launch NewsOn, a free, ad-supported streaming news app that will give users access to live and on-demand newscasts on mobile devices.

NewsOn is a joint venture between the ABC Owned Television Station Group, Cox Media Group, Hearst Television, Media General and Raycom Media.

The app is a joint effort to boost interest of local news on digital platforms, allowing users to watch newscasts from any of the partner stations.

Expected to launch in the fall of this year, NewsON, will reach 112 stations in 84 markets.

Former CNN exec Louis Gump will be NewsON’s CEO.
