A multi-Emmy award winning journalist, Fred retired from KENS Channel 5 in 2012. He had been an anchor/reporter at the station for 35 years.
A San Antonio native, with the exception of a 2-year period working as a reporter for for KCBS-TV in Los Angeles from 1975 to 1977, Fred spent his entire career in his hometown.
Starting as a radio reporter for KONO in 1970, he made his move to television in 1972 when he was hired at NBC affiliate WOAI. During his time at the station, he was a daytime reporter and co-anchored the 6 and 10 pm weekday newscasts.
In 2012, he told the San Antonio Express News he decided to retire at 63 because he didn’t “want to be a slave to the clock anymore,” having to get up early enough to make his 4:30 to 7 am newscast.
At the time, he had been anchoring the KENS morning news show for 15 years and “felt it was a good time to do other things,” like spend more time with his three sons and travel.
Fred had been battling leukemia for over a year.
