NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises today held a groundbreaking ceremony where it unveiled the plans for its new 450,000 sq. ft. global headquarters in Miami.
Telemundo network, which has leased the current Hialeah facility for the past 30 years, will be moving to the new digs in early 2018.
NBCUniversal and parent company Comcast will invest more than $250 million in the construction of the offices and television production studios, which will initially house 1,100 employees with the capacity to expand to approximately 1,300.
But the company won’t own the buildings. It will actually lease the space in a multi-year deal. A Telemundo spokesperson would not reveal the length of the lease agreement.
The facility, which will be built in approximately 21 acres at NW 25th Street and the Florida Turnpike, will house NBCUniverso, currently located in Miami Springs, Telemundo International, now in Coral Gables, Telemundo Studios which operates in Medley and Telemundo Network, based in Hialeah, all under one roof.
According to Telemundo, the building will be equipped with the latest production technology and the state-of-the-art facility will help the different production units to work in a more collaborative manner.
The South Florida Business Journal reports that under the terms of its public incentive deal with the state of Florida and Miami-Dade county, Telemundo pledged “to retain 800 jobs and create 150 jobs with average salaries of $89,000.”
According to the Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s economic development organization, if Telemundo follows through on those job goals and invests $260,000 in capital in the project, it would get a $3 million Target Jobs Incentive Fund from the county over the course of 6 years and a $5.5 million High Impact Performance Incentive, as well as a Capital Investment Tax Credit from the state of Florida.
