Fernández joins Telemundo as news EVP, replaces Vélez

Luis Fernández is Telemundo’s new EVP of Network News.

Another former Univision executive is joining Telemundo. The network today announced it hired Luis Fernández to be the new Executive Vice President of Network News, taking over from Luis Carlos Vélez who was in the role since January of 2015.

After holding the highest position in the network news department, Vélez steps down to return to on-air news work. He will now be a Telemundo News anchor and senior correspondent.

Telemundo would offer no additional specifics about Vélez’s anchoring duties or correspondent role.

Fernández, who was President of Entertainment and Univision Studios until 2013, will oversee the network news operations and manage editorial direction, programming and production of all news properties, including nightly and weekend “Noticiero Telemundo” newscasts, Sunday news program “Enfoque con José Díaz-Balart,” news magazine “Al Rojo Vivo,” and the news content on morning program “Un Nuevo Día.”

Luis Carlos Vélez will now be an anchor and senior correspondent for Telemundo News.

Fernández will also oversee other related network news programming, breaking news and specials and work closely with Mario Kreutzberger “Don Francisco,” whom he worked with at Univision, in producing and coordinating high profile interviews.

Before working for Univision, he was CEO of Radio Television Española (RTVE). Fernández previously held multiple positions in journalism, television, radio, news and production, including News Director at Canal +, News Director of Telecinco and News Director at Spain’s radio network Cadena SER.

He also held roles as General Manager at TV and film production company Plural Entertainment and CEO of PROMOFILM US.

Prior to joining Telemundo, Vélez was Anchor and News Director in Caracol Television in Colombia. He was previously an anchor and reporter for CNN International based in New York and an anchor for CNN en Español.
