Lantica Media ups Blaya, names Medina COO

Joaquín Blaya and Fred Medina

Former Univision and Telemundo President Joaquín Blaya has resurfaced in a top executive role at a media company.

Caribbean-based Lantica Media has appointed Blaya as Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Fred Medina as Chief Operating Officer.

Blaya, a Lantica board member for the past two years, spent 22 years at Univision as its President and CEO before moving to the same role at rival Telemundo in 1992. He was also Chairman and CEO of the now defunct Radio Única Corp between 1997 and 2004.

In the newly-created COO role, Medina will manage Lantica’s day-to-day studio operations and production services.

Prior to joining Lantica, Medina was EVP and Managing Director for BBC Worldwide, overseeing all commercial activities across Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic market. He previously held senior roles with MTV Latino, HBO Latin American Group, E! Entertainment, A&E Olé Networks, Univision and Ericsson Telecommunications.

Lantica is the majority owner of Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios, which offers production and financing services for films and television programs under its Lantica Pictures.
