After a month-long investigation into the murder of Texas journalist Jay Torres, homicide detectives have identified a suspect in the case.

Police have issued a murder warrant for the arrest of Aníbal Edilfredo Chirino Mejía of Garland, a 23 year-old with a prior criminal history.

He faces a murder charge for the shooting death of the longtime journalist.

Mejía is on the run. Garland Homicide detectives seeking the public’s help in locating Mejía, and are working with the U.S. Marshalls to find and arrest him.

Initial suspicions that Jay’s death was related to his journalism work were unfounded.

Investigators uncovered Jay’s real estate business was apparently the source of a conflict that led to his death.

According to Garland PD Lt. Pedro Barineau, investigators found unhappy customers had filed lawsuits against Jay related to real estate investments. An investigation into the lawsuits led to the suspect.

Although Jay’s body was found in a vacant home for sale on June 13, investigators believe he was shot and died three days earlier.
