Fox shutters Fox News Latino

Fox News Latino’s final homepage December 7, 2016

Fox News Latino is history. As of today, the news site launched in 2010 to cover stories on issues important to Latinos in English, no longer exists as a stand alone digital platform.

The site posted the following message several days ago notifying readers that on December 8 the Fox News Latino would be absorbed into the FoxNews.com website:

“On Dec. 8, Fox News Latino (FNL) content will be made available across a wider range of the FoxNews.com website.

The FNL team’s reporting will be published in relevant FoxNews.com sections — including US, World, Politics, Opinion, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Health, Science and Tech. This will allow more FNL stories to be seen by the larger Fox News audience across all platforms — including Fox News mobile, apps, Apple News, and Facebook Instant Articles.

Existing original FNL stories will be redirected to their new home on FoxNews.com. Visitors to FoxNewsLatino.com, meanwhile, will be redirected to a collection of Latino-focused content published across Fox News.com.”

Repeated requests for comment from Fox News about the change and the fate of Fox News Latino employees were unanswered.

However, in a lengthy Facebook post highlighting the site’s accomplishments, former FNL reporter Bryan Llenas, now a Fox News correspondent, indicated that most of the employees would remain within the company.

“I am proud that virtually all of my former colleagues will continue to work at Fox News in one capacity or another and I know they will bring the perspective and core of Fox News Latino’s mission wherever they go,” he wrote.

Not all of FNL’s content migrated to the FoxNews.com website. Some stories land on a 404 error page.

FNL also had a section with Spanish-language content. That has also disappeared.

Interestingly enough, if the objective is for the FNL content to be “available across a wider range of the FoxNews.com website,” Fox did a good job at hiding it from its homepage.

On the masthead of the FoxNews.com homepage, the Fox News Latino section is nowhere to be found. But if you go to Fox News Latino’s URL latino.foxnews.com, it redirects you a section of the FoxNews.com site that does have Fox News Latino on the masthead.

On the December 8, 2016 homepage of FoxNews.com, the Fox News Latino section is nowhere to be seen. However, if you click on the old Fox News Latino URL, it takes you to a section within the FoxNews.com website that does show it on the masthead.

In 2013, NBC also pulled the plug on NBCLatino.com, folding it into NBCNews.com just 18 months after it launched the Latino-targeted site.
