Romero, Santos among LA Weekly mass layoffs

Dennis Romero (L) and Garry Santos were among the staffers laid off at LA Weekly on November 29, 2017.

Veteran reporter Dennis Romero and multimedia designer Garry Santos are out of a job after the LA Weekly slashed more than half of its staff yesterday.

The cuts come as Voice Media Group completed the sale of the alternative weekly and handed the reins over the new owners, Semanal Media – a newly created company.

According to the LA Times, 9 of the 13 members of the editorial staff lost their jobs, including all the top editors and almost all staff writers.

Romero was a contributor for 7 years before becoming a staff reporter at the LA Weekly in 2009. He previously worked at the Los Angeles Times, Ciudad magazine, and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Santos joined the weekly as a staff multimedia designer in June of last year. Before that, he worked for Radar Online and the Daily Mail.
