Univision’s Wills and Rodríguez named to key leadership roles in Televisa management shake-up

Univision’s W Studios head Patricio Wills will now run Televisa Studios and Juan Carlos Rodriguez will lead Televisa Deportes.

The bonds between Univision and Televisa are becoming tighter as both companies undergo major restructuring and share resources and managers.

On Monday, Patricio Wills, who helped Univision launch joint venture W Studios, was named President of Televisa Studios, a new unit within the Mexican media company. In his new role, he’ll supervise talent and oversee all development and content production, except news and sports.

He’ll be reporting to Isaac Lee, Chief Content Officer for Televisa and Univision.

His arrival displaces Rosy Ocampo, a longtime Corporate VP of Content at Televisa.

Univision has yet to respond to whether Wills will continue to lead W Studios for Univision while running the new Televisa Studios.

Today, Televisa announced that Juan Carlos Rodríguez, President of Univision Deportes, will also be the new head of Televisa Deportes, in charge of coordinating the production and distribution of all sports content for both companies.

He replaces Yon de Luisa, who will become President of the Mexican Football Federation in July.

Rodríguez will report directly to Grupo Televisa Co-Presidents (Co-CEOs) Alfonso de Angoitia and Bernardo Gómez.

It’s interesting to note that in its announcement, Televisa points out that Rodríguez will help coordinate strategy and coverage for big sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Televisa has broadcast rights in Mexico. Univision does not have the U.S. Spanish-language rights to the games. Telemundo outbid Univision for those rights in 2011.

Televisa states that Rodríguez’s appointment reinforces the expansion of the relationship between Grupo Televisa and Univision “to benefit the Hispanic audience, both in Mexico and the United States,” in addition to having an integrated approach to production and distribution of content for both markets.
