Echevarría leaves Univision Digital News, Colón to lead team

Borja Echeverria - Selymar Colon

Borja Echevarría is no longer VP and Editor-in-Chief at Univision News Digital. He has left the company to return to Spain and El País newspaper, where he’ll be Managing Editor.

His last day at Univision was yesterday. He starts his new role, based in Madrid, tomorrow, June 14.

He took to Twitter to bid farewell to his team.

Echevarría joined Univision in 2014. He was previously Deputy Managing Editor at El País from 2010 to 2014.

Selymar Colón, currently Managing Editor and Senior Director for Univision News Digital, steps in to lead the 51-person team, whom he acknowledged in a follow-up tweet.

In April, Univision did a wave a layoffs that hit the company’s digital division. A spokesperson states Echevarría’s exit from the company is unrelated to the cuts.

Isaac Lee, former President of News and now Univision’s Chief Content Officer sent staffers the following email announcing Echevarría’s departure:

Dear Colleagues,

Just a note to let you know that Borja Echevarría, vice president and editor-in-chief, Univision News Digital, will be leaving Univision. He has accepted the position of managing editor for El País, Spain’s most important and widely read newspaper, and will return to his native country shortly. I make this announcement with mixed feelings, as we are all extremely happy about this momentous step for Borja’s brilliant career, but at the same time feel terribly sad to see him go.

Since he joined Univision in 2014, Borja has been a powerful driving force behind Univision News Digital’s growth and extraordinary achievements. Under his leadership, the digital arm of Univision News has become an international benchmark for Spanish-language journalism.

Thanks to his vision, direction and dedication, we established a world-class newsroom that’s home to many of the best digital journalists from the Spanish speaking world. Univision News Digital’s undeniable impact on global Spanish-language journalism is clearly evidenced by the numerous recognitions it has received, competing against the world’s most prestigious news outlets. In just four years, news reporting and specials published in UnivisionNoticias.com and our other digital platforms have been honored with 42 digital journalism prizes, including the Premio Ortega y Gasset (3), Edward R. Murrow Award, King of Spain International Journalism Award, Walter Cronkite Award, NAHJ Award (2), NPPA Award (4), and many others. Univision News’ digital expansion has allowed us to better serve our audiences via all platforms and made UnivisionNoticias.com one of the most visited news websites among Hispanics in the U.S.

Although he is leaving us, Borja’s legacy remains: a legacy of victories, innovations, teamwork, and visionary ideas made real. We will miss him, but he leaves Univision News Digital strong and vibrant, firmly positioned to continue winning at our mission of informing the Hispanic community with excellence and the utmost responsibility. I want to express my deepest gratitude to Borja for that and for so much more.

Please join me in wishing Borja all the best in this new phase of his life.

Best,

Isaac
