TEGNA stations launch Noticiero West Texas

Noticiero West Texas

TEGNA-owned stations KIDY FOX San Angelo and KXVA FOX in Abilene have launched a Spanish-language weekly digital newscast called “Noticiero West Texas.”

The special project taps the resources of both stations. No new or additional staff was hired for the newscast. Several of the station’s bilingual employees will work on the newscast, in addition to their daily duties on KIDY and KXVA’s English-language shows.

Eric Resendiz anchors the newscast, which currently lasts an average of 12 to 16 minutes.

This is the team working on the new project:

Maria Pasillas, forecaster and producer (in San Angelo)
Amanda Peralta Jasso, director/translator (in San Angelo)
Nereyda Vera, reporter (in Abilene)
Oscar Margain, border correspondent (from sister station KENS5 in San Antonio)

Assistant News Director Senora Scott oversees the project. She also contributes as a reporter and posts content to the website and Facebook.

Most of the stories on NWT are repurposed from the stations’ English-language newscasts.

“However, we try to incorporate as many new stories as possible,” says Scott. “We also try to find stories that we feel are the most important to our Spanish-speaking audience. This includes news from the border, Mexico, and many other countries such as Guatemala and Honduras.”

After a test run, “Noticiero West Texas” was officially launched July 27.

The newscast is posted directly to the NWT Facebook page and the station’s website.
