Spain’s El País launches U.S. Spanish-language edition

May 23, 2024 by Veronica Villafañe

Spain’s El País has launched a U.S. Spanish-language edition today, May 23, focusing on the Hispanic community.

Owned by Spanish media conglomerate PRISA, the online publication aims to provide comprehensive coverage of issues relevant to U.S. Latinos.

Ines Santaeulalia, named U.S. Managing Editor, will oversee the new operation from New York. She’ll lead a team of over 10 staffers based in New York, Washington, and Los Angeles, with plans to expand further.

The editorial team will deliver content in both Spanish and English. Names of the journalists on board have yet to be released.

According to a spokesman, the company is building a new U.S. newsroom and has a backup for some operations, mainly from Mexico, where the main Americas newsroom is located, and plans to add staff and freelancers.

The U.S. inaugural edition kicked off with front-page reporting highlighting the growing influence of the Latino vote in the November elections.

In addition to the website, El País U.S. is building its digital presence on Instagram, X, and Facebook, where it plans to engage its 300,000+ followers in the country.
