Ilia Calderón named Noticiero Univision’s first solo anchor

November 5, 2024 by Veronica Villafañe

She made history as the first Afro-Latina to anchor a weekday primetime newscast for a major broadcast network in the United States. Now, Ilia Calderón will achieve another significant milestone by becoming the first sole anchor of Noticiero Univision.

The award-winning journalist, who took over the anchor seat vacated by María Elena Salinas in 2017, has moderated presidential debates, and interviewed world leaders.

With over 20 years at Univision, Calderón has been co-anchoring the network’s newscast alongside Jorge Ramos. She previously spent seven years as co-anchor of “Noticiero Univision Edición Nocturna” at 11:30 p.m.

Following the surprise announcement in September that Ramos would exit Univision after the presidential election, speculation ran rampant about who would take his place.

Ultimately, the company chose Calderón to go solo. She will assume her new role when Ramos departs at the end of the year.
