Sandra Thomas has decided to leave Voice of America after nearly six years in leadership roles at the news agency.
She most recently served as director of VOA’s Latin America Division, a role she was promoted to in April 2023 after serving as acting director since June 2022.
Thomas-Esquivel joined VOA in 2019 as Spanish Service Chief, overseeing journalists reporting on U.S. and Latin America and overall news coverage.
Her departure comes amid an executive order-mandated shutdown of VOA that silenced the storied international news network for the first time in more than 80 years.
Thomas says leaving VOA does not signal her departure from journalism, and she is currently exploring new opportunities.
Based in Washington, DC, Thomas-Esquivel brought extensive experience to VOA from previous executive roles at Univision and Telemundo in California, Texas, and Mexico City.
Her past leadership roles include Director of News for Mexico and Central America at Telemundo network, news director at Telemundo Dallas, news director at KDTV Univision 14 and Senior Director of Local and Affiliate News for Univision News, and news director at Telemundo 52 Los Angeles.
Full disclosure: I am among the contributing contractors of VOA’s Latin America division affected by the shutdown.
