David Plazas is leaving his role as Opinion and Engagement Director at The Tennessean after more than a decade.
His last day in Nashville is May 2.
He is moving to a new position as Opinion Editor at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a Cox Enterprises-owned paper.
He starts in Atlanta on May 5.
Plazas joined The Tennessean in 2014 as Lead Engagement Editor. He was promoted to his current role in 2017. During his tenure, he led the editorial board, launched the Tennessee Voices interview series, and became known for his focus on community building and civil discourse.
The move to Atlanta marks his departure from Gannett, where he has spent nearly 25 years, including various roles at The News-Press in Fort Myers, Florida.
His final column at The Tennessean was published today, in which he reflects on his time in Nashville, sharing his thoughts on social media:
“This essay is about hospitality, gratitude, and, my favorite subject of late, community building in both large and small ways, to cope amid challenging times.”
Plazas also expressed his excitement about taking on a new adventure, living near his parents, and continuing his work as a journalist.
