Emmy award-winning journalist Jésica Zermeño Núñez has been named Mexico City bureau chief for Noticias Telemundo.
In her new role, Zermeño will manage the network news organization’s operation in Mexico City, overseeing multiplatform news coverage of Mexico and Central America.
She replaces Raúl Torres, who departed in December.
Citing her extensive experience “producing highly impactful journalism on a wide range of topics and issues in Mexico,” Noticias Telemundo’s EVP Gemma Garcia noted Zermeño’s appointment comes at a strategic time as the network expands its platforms at “a pivotal time in the U.S.-Mexico relationship and as the FIFA World Cup comes to the United States, Canada and Mexico.”
Zermeño, an investigative reporter who has covered migration, politics and security stories, joins Telemundo after nearly a decade as a correspondent and producer for Univision in Mexico.
Univision shut down its longtime Mexico City bureau at the end of 2024, amid company leadership changes and layoffs.
Previously, Zermeño worked as a reporter for the newspaper Reforma, where she designed and pioneered a national organized crime homicides database that became a key public reference to assess the levels of violence in Mexico.
She has also worked as a freelance editor at Penguin Random House Mondadori, focusing on books about politics and journalism.
