Jose Diaz Balart

José Díaz-Balart ends run at MSNBC, continues NBC anchor role

May 9, 2025 by Veronica Villafañe 24 Comments

José Díaz-Balart’s on-air role has been significantly reduced following the cancellation of his MSNBC show, José Díaz-Balart Reports.

MSNBC announced the end of the show in February as it planned to shut down Miami operations and consolidate production in New York and Washington, D.C., as part of the network’s spinoff from NBCUniversal.

Díaz-Balart delivered an emotional on-air farewell during his final broadcast on May 2, thanking viewers and colleagues as he concluded his run on the daily program.

Díaz-Balart began anchoring his MSNBC program in September 2021, marking a high-profile return to the network. At the time, he was the only anchor to simultaneously host both a weekday cable news show and a network evening newscast.

Although his daily MSNBC show has ended, Díaz-Balart will continue to anchor NBC News’ “Weekend Nightly News” on Saturdays.

I legitimately see retirement coming in his future. This is a sign he can now go to New York on weekends for nightly news. And during the week do whatever he schedule is relaxed.

Jose has always and still does the Saturday Nightly News from Miami from the Telemundo Miami set with background graphics of NBC News NY. A network would never expense the cost of what you assumed. LOL

Sorry to see the most classy of newsmen leave MSNBC.
There’s a perfect opening coming up at NBC nightly News. See you there bro!

Jose was an integral part of my mornings. Respectful, informed. A real professional journalist who was not afraid to show his humanity.
I miss him in my A.M.’s.

What’s msnbc doing to our beloved and such talented news anchors?! Really? Jose Diaz Balart? Rachel Maddow only one night? Chaos. That’s why their ratings are way down and it’s a shame. Get with the program.

I was wondering where he was. I can’t believe they let him go right after what they did to Joy . I watched him every morning here in Los Angeles and thought they only changed his spot. I’ll miss you Jose and I think MSNBC will regret that decision. Best of luck to you .

Hmmmm… diversity, where have you gone? New takeover wanted this and they got it. Will miss Jose greatly. I learned to love his show. I loved his presentation. I was really impressed with him, because of his bravery deciding to work on MSNBC. Very different from his family’s politics.

I’m so, so disappointed in MSNBC. IT APPEARS the very shows that have drawn and anchored me to the network have been axed. The gracious and genteel Mr. Jose Diaz Ballart, Ms. Katie Phang, Ms. Joy Reid and Ms. Alex Wagner, I might more, allllll people of color, have been eliminated as very significant and much respected voices and perspectives from our collective minority communities. Whoever has made these decisions, who has such a narrow view of the way the rest of us view the world and want to be represented is making it hard for many of us to continue to be loyal viewers of the network.
Instead of building and solidifying viewership, these management decisions are definitely weakening viewership. If THAT is the goal, MSNBC is definitely on a roll with so the recent programmatic changes.
    I’m so disappointed.

Jose Diaz Ballart is an excellent newscaster, hopefully NBC will keep him on, as a weekend anchor. He brings such heartfelt thoughts and positivity to today’s news! I miss him each day from MSNBC as my lunch time companion!!

I totally agree with you … Jose and I ate lunch together everyday. He was so very polite, humble and delivered the news with emotion, honesty, and sometimes humor. Jose was well respected by all and he is missed.

I looked forward to the Jose Diaz Ballart show every morning. I really miss it and don’t want to watch anyone else. I was hoping that they were preparing to put him on nightly news.

What were they thinking to cancel Jose’s spot on
MSNBC? His interviews were softly put but right on.
He always thanked his viewers for “the pleasure of
your company “. That intelligence and warmth is very missed.

Bad move, MSNBC. He was the only anchor who was multi-lingual and who truly sincerely touched the hearts of listeners, as well as their minds. I guess the cravenly cowards at MSNBC, like all mainstream media, has capitulated to the lustful quest for the almighty dollar.

I am so sad at the ending of Jose’s show. While I understand the wish to consolidate operations, I cannot say loudly enough how much I will miss his professionalism. How I looked forward to his show! What is going on? First you cancelled Mehdi Hassan, then Joy Reid, now Jose? I am not that interested in the vanilla lineup, so I don’t watch MSNBC that much anymore. I preferred to former intelligent MSNBC, not the current reality TV format. Donald Trump must be happy at your decline.

I agree! Jose was my favorite MSNBC journalist. A very classy guy who reported news and issues without lecturing or yelling at me. He assumed that I was intelligent enough to get news without dramatics. I watch more CNN now.

I was hoping Jose would get more air time not less. I enjoyed his positive stories, he was so professional and a first class act. The news is difficult to watch, his calm manner made it easier to listen to..I look forward to Saturday evening news.
