Mario Orellana leaves KSAT newsroom for Graham Media recruiting role

Mario Orellana has stepped down as news director at San Antonio’s KSAT to take on a position as recruiter at Graham Media Group, the station’s parent company.

Orellana, who had been news director since January 2023, spent nearly 30 years at the ABC affiliate. He started at KSAT in 1996 as an unpaid intern before being hired as a sports producer.

Throughout his career, he worked as a news editor, news producer, senior producer of Good Morning San Antonio, executive producer and assistant news director before landing the top newsroom job.

He was KSAT’s first Latino news director in more than 20 years.

In a social media announcement about ending his tenure in news, Orellana wrote:

“Being the news director in the city where I was born and raised and in the newsroom where I spent my formative years is a success story that I am immensely proud of.”

He transition to his new role as recruiter on May 5.
