Steve Malavé has returned to the newsroom, joining Tampa’s WFTS-TV ABC Action News as the station’s executive reporter.
In this role, which is an equivalent to a managing editor, he will collaborate with the on-air reporting team on storytelling and work closely with assignment editors in news gathering efforts.
“It’s great being back in the newsroom after serving as visiting professor of practice teaching multimedia journalism at the University of South Florida,” Malavé tells Media Moves. “I had a wonderful time these past three years at USF, where I coached and mentored students.”
However, overseeing news coverage firsthand remains his primary passion.
Before his academic role, he was the assistant news director overseeing daily editorial content for the Gray Media-owned ABC affiliate, WWSB-TV ABC7 in Sarasota.
Malavé’s extensive career also includes various news management positions, including news director at Telemundo 33 in Sacramento, and executive producer for KXTV ABC10, also in Sacramento.
He previously held the position of senior news content producer at the now defunct MundoFox.
His past experience includes roles as news director at NPR affiliate WUSF in Tampa, news director at Univision New York, and assistant news director at KMEX 34 Los Angeles.
