Univision launches UVideos

October 14, 2012 by Veronica Villafañe

Univision will launch its new bilingual online network UVideos tomorrow, Monday. Until now in beta testing, the site will provide on-demand programming and a social TV experience on a variety of devices. Users will be able to choose between content in English and Spanish.  For example, when a user chooses English, headings and meta data appear in English and Univision, Galavision and Telefutura content will appear with subtitles.

The ad supported platform is free to the consumer. It will offer about 1,500 hours of long form programming and about 100 short form clips a day, with no live programming. The site also supports TV Everywhere. Users who sign in and authenticate that they are a subscriber to a multi-channel distributor can get additional content. According to Univision, Dish Network, Cablevision Systems, AT&T, Verizon and Xbox are currently on board.

Users will be able to comment on shows in real time, or if they’re watching on demand, UVideos will synch comments to when the show was originally aired.

Univision will begin a major consumer marketing push for UVideos on Oct. 29. By then Univision expects to roll out apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. An Xbox app is expected in late November.
