Telemundo Arizona launches weekend newscasts, hires Aguirre to anchor

July 23, 2014 by Veronica Villafañe

Starting this weekend, Telemundo Arizona will have local weekend news in the Phoenix and Tucson markets.

KTAZ-39, the Telemundo O&O in Phoenix will air a half-hour of local news at 4:30 and at 10 pm MST on both Saturdays and Sundays.

The newscasts will also be simulcast on KHRR-40, the network’s Tucson station.

Telemundo Arizona is hiring a dozen additional staff members for the new newscasts.

Daniel Aguirre has been hired as weekend anchor. A lawyer in Mexico, Daniel was most recently the lead anchor for Milenio Noticias in Monterrey.

Ivan Valenzuela has been named weekend sports anchor. Prior to joining Telemundo, he worked at CNN Latino in Phoenix as sports anchor.

Karla Gomez-Escamilla also recently returned to Noticiero Telemundo Arizona as Bureau Chief responsible for leading the Tucson local news team and providing daily news reports from Tucson and along the U.S./Mexico border.

Henry Golac, the only Spanish-speaking meteorologist in the market, will be doing the weather for the station’s weekday newscasts.

For the launch, the station will unveil a new set with high-definition monitors. Telemundo Arizona also invested in new technology, including cellular backpack units that will enable the station to provide live reporting during the week and on weekends from breaking news scenes across the state and extending to the U.S./Mexico border.

Araceli De León, President and Regional General Manager, Telemundo Southwest is overseeing the expansion and additional investment in the news division.
