The battle over primetime audiences continues to intensify between rivals Telemundo and Univision, as both networks increase the stakes in original programming.

The networks unveiled their 2017-2018 programming plans to advertisers at Upfront events this week in New York, with flashy presentations and star-studded private concerts.

Although Telemundo was bundled into NBC’s Upfront, the network held a private event later in the evening on Monday, May 15 to do a more personalized pitch with Enrique Iglesias performing, while the next day, Univision called on Shakira and Becky G for its presentation entertainment.

While Telemundo holds the lead in producing original content, such as its super series, Univision revealed a slate that indicates it’s aware that Televisa telenovelas are just no longer enough for its U.S. audience.

Univision has added a several original series to its slate, including music series “Barrio Records” and an unauthorized Luis Miguel bio-series that will compete with Telemundo’s project about the Mexican superstar.

With the 2018 World Cup on the horizon, Telemundo is doubling up its promotional efforts of the soccer tournament, leaving Univision to pitch UEFA Champions League matches.
