Saturday, June 30 marks the 15-year anniversary of hyperlocal cable news channel NY1 Noticias, now Spectrum Noticias NY1.
Since its launch in 2003, the cable channel has had staff turnover and change in ownership, after Charter Communications acquired Time Warner Cable (TWC) in 2016. That’s when Charter rebranded the English and Spanish-language news channels to Spectrum News NY1 and Spectrum Noticias NY1.
Only three journalists remain from the original on-air talent team: Philip Klint, Adhemar Montagne, and Juan Manuel Benitez.
Maritza Puello helped launch NY1 Noticias and oversaw the channel as its Executive Director for 10 years. She left NY1 to help launch Fusion in 2013.
Roberto Lacayo replaced Puello in 2014.
For the past 13 years, NY1 Noticias has aired “Pura Política,” the longest-running local Spanish-language political talk show about New York City politics.
In addition to reporting major local stories, such as the devastation of Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the cable news channel has also covered international news that affect New York’s Latino community, like the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, Pope Francis’ historic visits to Cuba and New York City in 2015, tropical storm Noel in the Dominican Republic and cases of H1N1 in Mexico.
