Fernando Díaz is leaving the San Francisco Chronicle. He’s heading back to the Windy City and returning to The Chicago Reporter to become Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of the investigative monthly periodical.

Díaz, who joined the Chronicle as Managing Editor, Digital in February 2017, will leave his current post November 8. He starts in Chicago on November 19.

“Moving back to Chicago to lead the Reporter is a dream come true,” he tells Media Moves. “I’ve loved working with and for the journalists at the Chronicle, but I left the Reporter nine years ago in the hopes that one day I might come back to run it. And here we are. I’m blessed, honored and ready for the biggest challenge of my career.”

In his new role at the Reporter, he’ll guide all investigations and will be responsible for fundraising. He previously worked at the publication he’ll now lead as an investigative reporter and interned there while he was a college student.

Before the Chronicle, Díaz was Senior Editor of the Center for Investigative Reporting. His past experience includes positions as Managing Editor of Hoy Chicago, Community Manager for news and opinion for ChicagoNow, and reporter for the Daily Herald and the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, New York.
