Former EstrellaTV anchor Karla Amezola, who sued her boss and the network after reporting a history of sexual harassment, is back on television two years after she was fired from her job.

She landed a freelance reporting gig with Telemundo network news in December and most recently, spent 10 days covering the migrant crisis in Tijuana.

“I’m very grateful and happy for this opportunity to do what I am so passionate about,” Amezola tells Media Moves.

Amezola had resigned herself to not being able to continue her broadcast journalism career after being fired from EstrellaTV in 2016. She insists she was terminated for reporting years of sexual harassment by her boss, VP of News Andrés Angulo. Her lawsuit against Angulo and EstrellaTV is still pending.

Amezola did some freelance writing for Excelsior newspaper in Los Angeles, but had to resort to driving for Uber and Lyft for a living. Now, she feels very optimistic about her prospects of working in television news again.

“The decision to incorporate Karla Amezola to our news team has been based on professional criteria,” responds Telemundo EVP of network news Luis Fernández, when asked why he brought her on board. “The team thought that she is a professional who can bring her experience and knowledge to our department.”

Amezola is also featured on Gretchen Carlson’s sexual harassment documentary “Breaking the Silence,” which airs on Lifetime on January 14.

Amezola talks about how reporting sexual harassment has affected her life, how she relates to Gretchen Carlson, the documentary and her new role in the EstrellaTV bankruptcy in an exclusive story on Forbes.
