Univision in talks with Disney to launch English-language news channel

February 6, 2012 by Veronica Villafañe

Univision and the Walt Disney Co. are in talks to create a new 24-hour English-language cable-news channel, geared to target Latinos who speak English.

According to reports in the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press, the joint venture would be based in Miami and would launch before the November elections, according to sources close to the negotiations, which have apparently been going on for the past 6 months.

In the past year, Univision has made some moves towards producing English-language news, creating and launching a tumblr site.  The WSJ reports they’ll also be launching an English-language website in March.

In January, Univision announced it would include English subtitles on some of its programming. In April of last year, Univision Radio launched an English-language politically oriented radio show, hosted by Fernando Espuelas.

Also in January, Univision teamed up with ABC News for a Latino Decisions Poll, which accurately predicted the Florida Latino vote for Mitt Romney.

A spokesperson for Univision would not comment on the story, saying they do not address rumors.
