Salas among laid off staffers at Univision Radio’s WRTO

June 4, 2012 by Veronica Villafañe

Javier Salas

On the heels of Univision Radio’s announcement that the company is launching new AM radio network Univision América, it has fired all of WRTO’s staff.  That’s the Univision Radio news/talk AM station in Chicago known as La Tremenda.

According to media writer Robert Feder, Univision Radio “wiped out the entire full-time air staff,” eliminating the five program hosts and two technical board operators.

Morning personality Javier Salas, a 12-year veteran of the station was one of the casualties. Morning contributor Irma Campuzano, afternoon host Jorge Salazar, evening host Fernando Olvera and sports director Goyo Villanueva were also let go.

Feder says the staffers learned of their firings Thursday, but  “they’ve been asked to stay on until June 15, allowing them to say goodbye to listeners on the air.” He also says insiders tell him that the station will sell time-brokered programming until the debut of Univision America on July 4.
