Televisa and Univision to merge sports divisions

Univision-Televisa Deportes

The Televisa and Univision content synergy continues. The media companies will be merging their sports divisions to create “a new sports offering” that will reach a broader audience.

Televisa says that for the past several months it has been working with “strategic partner” Univision to “re-engineer” its talent pool, create new programs and develop a new pan-regional image that focuses on the latest tech and digital apps to reach its audiences.

That combined new sports brand will be announced on June 9.

A Univision spokesperson would not confirm any details, timeline or provide additional information, but issued the following statement:

“We’re excited to collaborate with Televisa on an unprecedented effort that will elevate and expand sports coverage across North America. We look forward to sharing more information in the near future.”

A Televisa/Univision sports division merger will more than likely mean some personnel redundancies will be eliminated, resulting in potential cost-savings for both companies.

Televisa owns a big chunk of Univision, after the FCC cleared the way for the Mexican media giant to increase its stake in the U.S. Spanish-language media company to 49% in 2017. Shortly after, both broadcasters merged their content development and production divisions.
